Hotech HT/DLJ-1 Laser Ceilometer Deployed on Sanya Offshore Oil Platform

Release time:

2026-04-20

Located in the South China Sea off Sanya, the offshore oil production platform undertakes long-term oil and gas exploitation, heavy-duty hoisting, and helicopter transportation for personnel and materials. The marine climate in this sea area is complex and changeable, with frequent low scattered clouds and sudden low-cloud weather. Cloud base height and cloud layer status are core meteorological indicators that directly restrict helicopter takeoff and landing as well as large-scale hoisting operations.

Project Overview

Located in the South China Sea off Sanya, the offshore oil production platform undertakes long-term oil and gas exploitation, heavy-duty hoisting, and helicopter transportation for personnel and materials. The marine climate in this sea area is complex and changeable, with frequent low scattered clouds and sudden low-cloud weather. Cloud base height and cloud layer status are core meteorological indicators that directly restrict helicopter takeoff and landing as well as large-scale hoisting operations.

Traditional manual cloud observation relies on visual inspection, which features large errors, poor real-time performance, and inability to work continuously at night and in extreme weather, failing to meet the standardized safety management requirements of offshore oil platforms. To solve this industry pain point, Qingdao Hotech Automation deployed the self-developed HT/DLJ-1 Marine Laser Ceilometer for the platform, building an all-weather, high-precision automatic cloud monitoring system to underpin the safe operation of offshore energy facilities.

On-Site Equipment & Design Advantages

The HT/DLJ-1 laser ceilometer is professionally customized for harsh offshore working conditions and adopts a complete marine-grade anti-corrosion and weather-resistant design, fully adapting to the high salt spray, high humidity, strong sea wind and large temperature difference environment of the South China Sea offshore platform.

The equipment housing adopts thickened industrial anti-corrosion shell with full three-proof (moisture-proof, mildew-proof, salt spray-proof) coating treatment and reaches IP66 high protection level. The sealed anti-corrosion base and waterproof wiring structure effectively avoid equipment aging and failure caused by marine erosion, realizing long-term stable unattended operation on open-air decks.

Based on advanced laser pulse ranging technology, the ceilometer realizes 24/7 uninterrupted automatic monitoring, accurately detecting key parameters such as cloud base height, layered cloud thickness and total cloud cover. It can capture hidden dangers such as low clouds and broken cumulus clouds in real time, make up for the lag and inaccuracy of manual observation, and output standardized and continuous meteorological monitoring data.

Matched with the supporting stainless steel anti-corrosion control cabinet, the equipment supports local real-time data display, automatic data storage and long-term file archiving. It can also be seamlessly connected to the platform’s central control system to realize remote data transmission and over-limit early warning, fully complying with offshore oilfield safety production and data compliance management specifications.

Project Value & Solution Advantages

Low cloud cover is one of the main hidden dangers of offshore platform safety accidents. Sudden low clouds will block the sight of helicopter pilots and interfere with the visual judgment of hoisting operators, easily leading to flight risks and hoisting collision accidents.

After the deployment of Hotech laser ceilometer, the platform realizes digital and refined cloud condition monitoring: it automatically tracks cloud layer changes throughout the day, provides accurate meteorological basis for operation approval, helicopter scheduling and hoisting construction arrangement, effectively avoids safety risks caused by sudden cloud weather, and greatly improves the intelligent level of offshore platform meteorological safety early warning.

Project Summary

This Sanya offshore oil platform project verifies the excellent environmental adaptability and monitoring reliability of Hotech marine laser ceilometer in extreme marine working conditions. Hotech will continue to optimize marine professional monitoring equipment, provide stable and accurate cloud monitoring solutions for global offshore oil and gas platforms, offshore wind farms and other marine engineering projects, and guard the safe and efficient operation of marine energy industries.
